Hundreds galore: Most Test centuries at each batting position
Test cricket is a format which is cherished most by any cricketer. Every batsman who plays for his country wants to contribute as much as possible to the team. Scoring a hundred in Test cricket is considered a big milestone for a batsman.
The record for scoring most centuries in Test cricket belongs to Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin has 51 Test tons to his name in 200 matches he played for India. In this article, we are going to list out the batsmen scoring most hundreds at each batting position.
Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar holds the record for hitting most hundreds as an opener in Test cricket. Gavaskar smashed 33 tons in 203 innings he opened for India in the longest format of the game. In total, Gavaskar managed to hit a total of 34 Test centuries in his career. He made 9607 runs at an average of 50.3 as a Test opener.
Kumar Sangakkara has scored most tons while batting at number-3 in Test matches. The Sri Lankan wicket-keeper hit 37 hundreds in 207 innings at number-3 in the longest format. Apart from these 37 centuries, Sangakkara hit 1 more century in his career which came while batting at number-4. In total, Sangakkara has 11679 runs at number-3 with an impressive average of 60.83.
Sachin Tendulkar hit 44 of his 51 Test tons at number-4 batting spot. These hundreds came in a total of 275 innings. The record for hitting most centuries and most runs at any single position in Test cricket also belongs to Master Blaster. He has 13492 Test runs to his name while batting at number-4 with a fine average of 54.40.

Former Australian Captain Steve Waugh scored most hundreds at number-5 batting position. He made a total of 24 tons with 6754 runs at a wonderful average of 56.28 during his batting tenure at the number-5 spot. Among the players with most Test centuries at number-6, Asad Shafiq of Pakistan is at the top spot. He has a total of 9 hundreds at this position, scoring 3011 runs at an average of 41.82.
Among other batting positions, Australia’s dashing wicket-keeper hit most hundreds (12) at number-7 with an average of 46.45. If a lower-order batsman contributes to the team’s total, it gives them a big boost to be ahead in the game. Former Kiwi captain Daniel Vettori hit most tons (4) at number-8.
At number-9, most centuries (2) came from South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock’s bat. Reggie Duff of Australia is the only player to hit a century while batting at number-10 in Test cricket. There has not been a single player in Test history who has been successful in hitting a century at number-11 batting position.
