IPL 2020: 5 overseas players who might feature longer in dug-outs

Fabian Allen

IPL has been the biggest platform where many talented players have got a chance to showcase their talent. However, it is also one of the toughest leagues as the competition is insane. One of the hardest things in determining the playing combination of an IPL side is the slotting of overseas cricketers. With only four places up for grabs and a range to choose from, it often leads to some foreign cricketers warming the bench for a majority of the season. Let’s take a look at 5 such probable ones this year-

Chris Green – KKR

CPL

Chris Green is one of the few Aussie players who has been a consistent face in franchise cricket. He has been one of the best all-rounders in the Big Bash League (BBL). However, it is very hard for him to get a game this season as he will be representing KKR: a team consisting of Sunil Narine and Andre Russell. Even in case of an injury, KKR might stick with Tom Banton, and hence, Green might have to warm the bench for the most part of the current season.

Tom Curran – RR

Tom Curran is now a regular feature of the English T20I side. Despite being one of the most complete and fulfilled English all-rounders, he might not get a game in the upcoming edition of the IPL. His current franchise, Rajasthan Royals (RR) boasts the likes of Jofra Archer and Andrew Tye. The former has been their best seamer for the past 2 seasons, which makes the chances of Curran featuring only lesser.

Joshua Philippe – RCB

Joshua Phillipe lit the auctions when he was picked up by the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore for a sum of Rs 20 Lakh. The swashbuckling Australian wicketkeeper-batsman was rewarded for his performances in the 2019 BBL, where he finished as the third-highest run-getter in the tournament. However, it is unlikely that he would get a chance to feature in the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) playing XI as RCB already has Aaron Finch, who looks all set to open the innings.

Hardus Viljoen – KXIP

The pacer from South Africa represented the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) last season and is all set to play for them in this season as well. However, with Sheldon Cottrell, someone for whom they invested so much money, and Chris Jordan, one of the best T20 bowlers of the current era, it looks tough for Viljoen to get a game in IPL 2020. Besides, he had an economy rate of 9.5 in the IPL 2019.

Fabian Allen – SRH

Fabian Allen is one of the most talented all-rounders from West Indies currently. Despite the limited opportunities, he has managed to impress through his exploits. However, he will be playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) this time around, who already have Mohammad Nabi. With the likes of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Vijay Shankar in the slot, it is difficult for Allen to get too many games.
