IPL: Instances of two centuries in one game

With the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) rapidly approaching its end, the fans have already experienced their fair share of excellent knocks in the competition. Eight centuries have been scored in the ongoing marquee tournament so far, and the same has been the culture of the tournament for quite a few years now.

However, there have been some instances where the fans have seen two centuries in a single game by the players of their respective teams. Continuing upon the same, let us have a look at four instances of two centuries in one game.

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers vs Gujarat Lions (2016)

Back in the IPL 2016, Royal Challengers Bangalore took on Gujarat Lions in the 44th game of the tournament. Coming in to bat first, Bangalore notched up a whopping 248 runs on the board. Thanks to centuries by both Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers that the side was able to post such a mammoth total. Kohli scored 109 runs in 55 balls, whereas de Villiers played an unbeaten knock of 129 runs in 52 deliveries. Their knocks ultimately proved to be crucial as Bangalore won the game by 144 runs.

David Warner and Jonny Bairstow vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (2019)

Another instance of two centurions in the same game came when Sunrisers Hyderabad took on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 11th match of the IPL 2019. Johnny Bairstow and David Warner were the ones who scored brilliant centuries to put 231 runs on the board. Bairstow amassed 114 runs in 56 balls, whereas Warner scored 100* runs in 55 deliveries. Their knocks ultimately helped Hyderabad win the game by 118 runs.

Heinrich Klassen (SRH) and Virat Kohli (RCB) in 2023

The same happened in the 65th game of the IPL 2023, when Sunrisers Hyderabad took on Royal Challengers Bangalore. Heinrich Klassen and Virat Kohli scored centuries for their respective sides and became the first opposing pair of centurions in the IPL. In the first innings, Klassen scored 104 runs in 51 deliveries to help Hyderabad notch up 186 runs. However, Virat Kohli came in with all guns blazing and scored 100 runs in 63 deliveries to chase the target down and win the game.

RCB faced GT on the final day of the league stage. It was a must-win game for them to enter the playoffs and it proved to be a run feast. India’s present and future of batting put up a show with sterling centuries. In the first innings, Virat Kohli scored 101* in 61 balls as RCB posted 197/5. In reply, Gill struck 104* from 52 balls as Gujarat Titans won by 6 wickets.
