IPL: Occasions when both Orange and Purple caps went to the same team

An Orange Cap winner is the one who scores the most runs in the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) competition while the one who takes the most wickets gets the Purple Cap. On a very rare occasion, both the awards go to the same team. Out of the 15 editions that have been played so far, only thrice such an instance has occurred. Interestingly, all three times the team with Orange and Purple cap winners failed to win the tournament that year.

Let’s take a look at the occasions when Orange and Purple caps went to the same side in the IPL:

Michael Hussey and Dwayne Bravo (2013)

Michael Hussey and Dwayne both represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2013 edition and won the awards. For scoring 733 runs in 17 innings at an average of 52.35 and a strike rate of 129.50, Hussey won the Orange Cap as he smashed six half-centuries with the highest score of 95, while Bravo took 32 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 15.53 and an economy rate of 7.95 with the best figures of 4/42 to grab the Purple Cap. Bravo’s tally is the joint-most wickets in a single IPL season with Harshal Patel picking up 32 wickets in 2021. CSK entered the finals on the back of these two players’ efforts but lost it to Mumbai Indians (MI).

David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2017)

David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar grabbed the awards playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the year 2017. Skipper Warner struck 641 runs in 14 matches at an average of 58.27 and a strike rate of 141.81. He slammed one century and four half-centuries with the highest score of 126 and won the Orange Cap. On the other hand, Bhuvneshwar Kumar snared 26 scalps in 14 games at an average of 14.19 and an economy rate of 7.05 with the best bowling figures of 5/19 as he became the first SRH bowler to win the Purple cap. SRH entered the playoffs but lost in the eliminator clash to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal (2022)

Jos Buttler wreaked havoc in the entire 2022 season as he hammered 863 runs in 17 innings at a terrific average of 57.53 and a strike rate of 149.05. He struck four centuries and as many fifties with the best score of 116 and also equaled Virat Kohli’s record of four tons in a season. He became the first RR batter to clinch the Orange Cap award. His teammate Yuzvendra Chahal spun his web to pick 27 wickets in 17 games at an average of 19.51 and an economy rate of 7.75 with best figures of 5/40, which included a hat-trick. He became the first spinner to take most wickets in an IPL edition. RR reached the mega final but lost to newcomers Gujarat Titans (GT).
