Most wickets in a single T20 World Cup edition

Hasaranga

Picking up wickets in a global tournament like T20 World Cup is always special. T20 is a format that is often dubbed as a batter format, but it is the bowlers who change the dynamics of the match and help their side in victories. A bowler always looks for wickets irrespective of the format and the league. In T20 World Cups, few bowlers have picked up wickets throughout the series and helped their side in reaching the finals.

Let’s take a look at the bowlers with the most wickets in a single T20 World Cup campaign:

3.Dirk Nannes (14 in 2010)

Former Australian fast bowler Dirk Nannes has taken the third-most wickets in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. In 2010, Nannes snared 14 scalps in seven innings at an average of 13.07 and a strike rate of 11.1. His economy rate was just 7.03 with the best bowling figures of 4/18. The left-arm pacer was instrumental in his side’s reaching the finals of the marquee event where they lost to arch-rivals England.

2.Ajantha Mendis (15 in 2012)

Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis is the second name on this list. The right-arm off-break bowler took 15 wickets in six innings in the 2012 edition at a solid average of just 9.80 and a strike rate of 9.6. His performance of 6/8 against Zimbabwe is still the second-best individual performance among full members in T20 internationals. Mendis also took 4/12 in the final against West Indies but his side lost the ultimate clash.

1.Wanindu Hasaranga (16 in 2021)

Another Sri Lankan spinner and their latest sensation, Wanindu Hasaranga tops this elite list. The leg-break bowler took 16 wickets in eight matches in the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup. Hasaranga bowled at an average of 9.75 and a strike rate of 11.2. His economy rate was 5.20 with the best performance of 3/9. The spin bowler also achieved a hat-trick, becoming the first Lankan bowler to do so in T20 World Cups.
