Jasprit Bumrah named ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2024

India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, has been honored with the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award for 2024, following a year of exceptional performances. After overcoming a recurring back injury in late 2023, Bumrah returned to the Test arena with remarkable vigor, leading the bowling charts with 71 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 14.92 and a strike rate of 30.1. These figures not only placed him at the top of the wicket-takers list but also marked the best annual tally of his career.
Bumrah’s standout performance came during India’s tour of Australia, particularly in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Despite India’s series loss, he was a dominant force, claiming 32 wickets in five matches at an average of 13.06, which earned him the Player of the Series award. His match-defining spells, especially at Perth where he guided India to a 295-run victory, were among the highlights of the series.
Throughout the year, Bumrah showcased his versatility by excelling in various conditions. Whether in the pace-friendly environments of South Africa and Australia or on the more challenging pitches for fast bowlers in India, he remained consistently effective. His unique bowling style, characterized by a minimal run-up and late ball release, continued to confound batsmen worldwide, contributing significantly to his impressive statistics.
ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year, Jasprit Bumrah: “I am deeply honored to receive the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award. Test cricket has always been a format I hold close to my heart, and to be recognized on this platform is truly special. This award is not just a reflection of my individual efforts but also of the unwavering support of my teammates, coaches, and fans who continue to believe and inspire me every day. Representing India is a privilege I deeply cherish, and knowing my efforts bring smiles to people around the world makes this journey even more special.” he said
This accolade places Bumrah alongside cricketing greats, making him the first Indian to receive the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award since Virat Kohli in 2018. His recognition comes amidst strong competition from notable players such as England’s Joe Root and Harry Brook, and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis, all of whom had remarkable performances in 2024.
Bumrah’s journey from a self-taught bowler to becoming one of the most feared pacers in international cricket is a testament to his dedication and skill. His contributions have been pivotal in India’s successes over the past year, and this award underscores his status as a linchpin in the team’s bowling attack.
