Playing all games in Dubai is an advantage: Mohammed Shami

India’s lead pacer, Mohammed Shami, acknowledged that playing all their Champions Trophy matches at a single venue in Dubai has been advantageous for the team. Following India’s semi-final victory over Australia, Shami delivered an impressive performance with figures of 3/48.
He commented on the benefits of familiar conditions. “It definitely helped us because we know the conditions and the behaviour of the pitch, It is a plus point that you are playing all the matches at one venue.” Shami noted.
India’s decision to play exclusively in Dubai stems from geopolitical tensions, leading them to opt out of traveling to Pakistan, the official host of the tournament. This arrangement has sparked discussions among cricket analysts regarding the perceived advantage. Former England captain Michael Atherton remarked, “What about the advantage India have in playing in Dubai, only in Dubai? Which seems to me to be a hard-to-quantify advantage, but an undeniable advantage.”
In contrast, India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, dismissed claims of any undue advantage. He emphasized that the team had not practiced at the main stadium and had been training at the ICC Academy, where pitch conditions differ significantly. Gambhir addressed critics by stating, “Some people are just perpetual cribbers, man. They’ve got to grow up.”
Despite differing opinions, India’s consistent performances in Dubai have been noteworthy. The team has secured victories in nine out of their ten matches at this venue, with one match ending in a tie. As they prepare for the upcoming final against New Zealand, this familiarity with the conditions could play a pivotal role in their quest for the Champions Trophy title.
