On this day in 2021: DC win a thriller against SRH in super over

On this day, in 2021, the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals prevailed over the David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad as the Indian Premier League witnessed the first Super Over of the 2021 season. Rishabh Pant’s side had been doing good with the chase that season, but suddenly the skipper opted to defend in that game.

His decision somewhat worked out him as the openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw did a good job by scoring 51 in the powerplay. Shaw played a fine knock and compiled runs to get his half-century. After the two were dismissed, Rishabh Pant and Steve Smith added some crucial runs batting in the middle-order and helped their team to post a par score of 159/4.

During the chase, SRH openers Warner and Jonny Bairstow started off well, with the former taking charge of a major chunk of their partnership. But after the two were dismissed, SRH faced an unbelievable collapse. The Kiwi batter Kane Williamson held one but the lack of good partnerships hurt the team.

Just when it seemed like the game had slipped out of SRH’s hand, Jagadeesha Suchith smashed 14 runs in six balls batting and helped his side to reach 159 by the end as SRH stood at an equal position to take the match into a Super Over.

DC handed over the bowling task to Axar Patel, who was playing his maiden IPL game of the season. Patel was out of the game owing to Covid-19 reasons but had performed really well with the ball during the second innings. He put up a remarkable performance in the Super Over as he conceded just seven runs, keeping the SRH batters in check.

To defend eight runs in the Super Over, Rashid Khan was given the responsibility with the ball, and Rishabh Pant and Shikhar Dhawan were on the field with the aim to win. The two ensured that the match ended dramatically as they chased the final run on the last ball of the over as Rashid failed to defend.
