On this day in 2021: MI triggers a sensational SRH collapse

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians completed a heist over the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a group stage match played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 17, 2021. Mumbai were defending a total of 151 and despite an excellent start from SRH openers, they managed to come on top.

MI after winning the toss opted to bat against SRH. MI finished their innings at 150/5 as the openers Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma scored 40 and 32 runs respectively. Other than the opening duo, West Indian allrounder Kieron Pollard (35 off 22) gave an excellent finish to his side. For SRH, Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman and all-rounder Vijay Shankar took two wickets each, and pacer Khaleel Ahmed got a wicket as well.

Chasing 151, the Orange Army were bowled out for just 137 runs in 19.4 overs. Skipper David Warner gave his side a decent start along with his opening partner Jonny Bairstow. The left-handed batter scored 36 runs off 34 balls, whereas Bairstow smashed 43 off 22 deliveries. However, as soon as both openers were sent to the pavilion, SRH lost its stability and the tide turned towards MI’s side.

All-rounder Vijay Shankar (28 off 25 balls) was the other prominent scorer but he couldn’t manage to win the game for his side, getting dismissed in the 19th over. Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar and pacer Trent Boult were the noteworthy bowlers for the Mumbai Indians, taking three wickets each. Meanwhile, senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Krunal Pandya registered a dismissal each to help their team.

West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard was adjudged player of the match for his 35 with the bat and giving away just ten runs in two overs he bowled in the match.
