Mushfiqur Rahim calls time on his One-Day International career
Veteran Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim has announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket with immediate effect.
The 37-year-old announced on his official Instagram page, stating, “I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today. Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty.”
Mushfiqur’s decision comes in the wake of Bangladesh’s disappointing performance in the recent Champions Trophy, where they failed to secure a single victory. His form was also under scrutiny, with scores of 0 against India and 2 against New Zealand during the tournament.
Reflecting on his career and recent challenges, he added, “The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny.”
Over a distinguished 19-year ODI career that began in 2006 against Zimbabwe, Mushfiqur amassed 7,795 runs in 274 matches, averaging 36.42, including nine centuries and 49 fifties. His run tally is second only to Tamim Iqbal in Bangladesh’s ODI history. As a wicketkeeper, he recorded 243 catches and 56 stumpings, underscoring his pivotal role in the team’s successes over the years.
Mushfiqur had previously retired from T20 Internationals following the 2022 T20 World Cup. In Test cricket, he has represented Bangladesh in 94 matches and is on track to become the first Bangladeshi player to reach the 100-test milestone. Expressing gratitude, he concluded his announcement by thanking his family, friends, and fans for their unwavering support throughout his career.
