England’s Jacob Bethell ruled out of Champions Trophy

England’s cricket team has encountered a significant setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. The 21-year-old sustained the injury during the ongoing ODI series against India, which led to his absence in the second match. Subsequent assessments confirmed that the injury would prevent his participation in the upcoming tournament.

In response to Bethell’s unavailability, England has called up Somerset batsman Tom Banton as a replacement for ODIs against India. Banton, who last represented England in 2022, offers strong top-order batting skills and can also provide wicketkeeping backup. He has been included in the squad for the remaining ODIs against India and is expected to feature in the Champions Trophy squad as well.

England’s captain, Jos Buttler, expressed disappointment over Bethell’s injury, stating, “I’m pretty sure he’s been ruled out of the Champions Trophy, to be honest. So, that’s really disappointing for him. Obviously, he played nicely the other day and has been one of the really exciting players. So, it’s a shame that the injury is going to rule him out.”

The ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to commence on February 19, 2025, with England set to face Australia in their opening match on February 22. The team will be keen to integrate Banton swiftly to maintain their competitive edge in the tournament.
