3 most expensive players in IPL history

The mega auction of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) is a few days away as it will take place on February 12 and 13, 2022 in Bangalore. The excitement of the world’s most popular and entertaining T20 league will reach another level this time around for two major reasons. Firstly, there will be two new teams (Lucknow and Ahmedabad) making their debuts and then, a mega auction will be conducted for the 2022 season like last time it was held in the year 2018.

Meanwhile, here are the three most expensive players in IPL history:

Chris Morris

With Kohli and Rahul occupying the first two spots for the richest buys, the third name in the list is of South Africa’s now retired all-rounder Chris Morris. He was signed by Rajasthan Royals for an eye-catching amount of 16.25 crores in the 2021 auction. The Pretoria-born fast bowler also has 95 wickets to his name in the IPL and is the only overseas player in all IPL auctions to fetch such an astounding deal of over 16 crores.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul

Ahead of the mega IPL auction 2022, the new RPSG group-owned Lucknow franchise declared their signing of KL Rahul for Rs.17 crores, making him the joint-highest paid player along with Virat Kohli in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rahul, who opens the batting and has amassed 626, 670, 593, 659 runs in the last four seasons also provides the wicketkeeping option along with his leadership duties.

Virat Kohli

In 2018, RCB retained the former India captain Kohli for the same amount (17 crores) as the Indian duo now is the most expensive buys in IPL cricket. Notably, Kohli has played for RCB in his entire IPL career since its inception in 2008. The two new sides were allowed to bid for their favourite player with a limited amount for a contract that runs for three years.
