3 players who deserved a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad

With the T20 World Cup coming up in two months, all the talks among fans and teams would be in the grand scheme of things about the mega event. The teams that have sealed the berth in the tournament would be already forming their best playing XI and building a squad around it.

India have already announced their 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup. And after a disappointing outing in the Asia Cup 2022 earlier in the month, the Men in Blue would be raring to make amends in the World Cup. While the World Cup squad followed more or less the exact blueprint as the Asia Cup squad, there are still some surprising omissions, given their recent form and what they can add to the existing core team.

Here are the three players who deserved a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad:

Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami is undoubtedly one of the best fast bowlers in India across formats. He can swing the new ball and has the tools to bowl at the death. He has played 17 T20Is and 133 T20 games overall and picked up 156 wickets with an economy rate of 8.28. Shami also fared well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, picking up 20 wickets in 16 games with an economy rate of 8.00. However, it seems that the Indian management has looked past Shami in the T20 circuit since he has not played a game since November 2021.

Ravi Bishnoi

The 22-year-old leg-spinner and one of the future prospects of Indian cricket, He has taken 16 wickets in 10 matches at an economy rate of 7.08 and the best figures of four wickets for 16 runs. Bishnoi has already shown in his young IPL career, bagging 37 wickets in as many matches at an economy rate of 7.53, which show that he is a proven campaigner and has got what it takes to play on the big stage. He was also part of the Asia Cup squad but had to make way for the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin in the T20 World Cup squad.

Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson’s India career never really set afloat as he was never given a good run of games. It shocked many fans when he was not picked in the squad for the Asia Cup. And now, he would be hard done by the World Cup omission. It was particularly shocking, given that he has performed well in recent times, scoring 179 runs in six games this year at an average of 44.75 and a strike rate of 158.40.
