5 lowest powerplay scores in IPL history

The first six overs in the T20 format are really crucial from the batting team’s point of view. The batters look to maximize the most of the overs up front to lay the platform for a big total on the board. Though the bowling sides are also at their best to keep the scores under control in these powerplay overs. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), teams have struggled to get off to a rollicking start in the first six overs the years.

5.Kolkata Knight Riders (17/4)

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have the fifth-lowest score in the powerplay. They scored just 17 runs for the loss of four wickets against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2020 in Abu Dhabi. KKR’s top order was just blown away by Mohammed Siraj who became the first player to deliver two maidens in an innings. He bowled two consecutive maidens of which one was a double-wicket maiden to win the game for his side.

4.Chennai Super Kings (16/1, Twice)

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has registered scores of 16/1 twice in the powerplay overs. In the opening match of the 2019 IPL, CSK managed just 16/1 against RCB in Chennai. Chasing just 71 runs, CSK lost Shane Watson early on a spinning track but did win the game at the end. They scored the same against Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2015. Batting first, CSK mustered just 16 runs for one wicket in Raipur. Zaheer Khan and Shahbaz Nadeem kept things tight as CSK scored 119 runs to lose the game.

3.Chennai Super Kings (15/2)

CSK again managed a low score upfront. They registered just 15 runs with the loss of two wickets against KKR in Kolkata in 2011. Batting first, the team lost Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina to Iqbal Abdulla and Yusuf Pathan respectively as they scored just 114 runs for four wickets in the 20 overs, subsequently losing the encounter by ten runs (D/L method).

2.Rajasthan Royals (14/2)

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have the second-lowest powerplay score. Chasing 134 to win, RR found themselves at just 14/2 against RCB in Cape Town in 2009. They lost both Graeme Smith and Swapnil Asnodkar to Praveen Kumar as the team got bundled out for just 58 runs in 15.1 overs to lose the clash by 75 runs. It is their lowest ever total in the history of the IPL and second-lowest overall in the competition.

1.Sunrisers Hyderabad (14/3)

Sunrisers Hyderabad hold the record for the lowest powerplay total. They scored just 14/3 against RR in the ongoing 2022 edition in Pune. Chasing a mammoth total of 211 to win, SRH lost skipper Kane Williamson, Rahul Tripathi, and Nicholas Pooran in the first six overs. Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult were the chief destroyers as SRH lost the match by 61 runs.
