5 overseas players with the most IPL wickets

Lasith Malinga

The Indian Premier League has witnessed many bowlers make a mark for themselves with some outstanding performances in the last 14 seasons. While there have been some Indian bowlers as well in that list, even the overseas bowlers have also set high benchmarks. Without further ado, here’s a look at five of the foreign bowlers who have made a tremendous impact in the marquee tournament.

  1. Rashid Khan:

Rashid Khan has also been a great foreign bowler ever since he first burst onto the scene in the IPL during the 2017 edition. Having represented the 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last five seasons, the Afghan leggie has picked up 93 wickets from 76 matches at an average of 20.55 and an economy rate of 6.33.

Khan has been roped in by the new entrants Gujarat Titans for IPL 2022 for a staggering INR 15 crore which is the joint-most for the franchise this season along with star India all-rounder as well as GT’s new captain Hardik Pandya.

  1. Dale Steyn:

After Lasith Malinga, another foreign fast bowler who has made a tremendous impact in the cash-rich event is Dale Steyn.  The Proteas pacer is a seasoned player, having represented four teams. Steyn has picked up 97 wickets from 95 appearances averaging 25.85 at an economy rate of 6.91.

Dwayne Bravo’s West Indies teammate Sunil Narine has also been one of the most impactful overseas bowlers in the IPL.  The KKR mystery spinner might have never won the Purple Cap so far but, he has registered 143 scalps to his name from 134 outings averaging 24.53 at an economy rate of 6.74.

  1. Dwayne Bravo:

Dwayne Bravo has also been one of the most consistent performers with the ball in hand in the IPL and is the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 167 wickets from 151 games at an average of 24.31 and an economy rate of 8.35. It is to be noted that DJ Bravo has won the Purple Cap award thrice in the 2013 and 2015 editions respectively. His tally of 32 scalps in 2013 is the joint-highest along with RCB medium-pacer Harshal Patel in a single edition of the competition.

  1. Lasith Malinga

Lasith Malinga is the most successful bowler in the history of the tournament. In fact, the former Sri Lanka speedster has also registered the most number of scalps to his name in IPL with 170 wickets from 122 matches averaging 19.80 and an economy rate of 7.14. The yorker specialist had also won the Purple Cap in the 2011 edition for taking 28 wickets from 16 matches. Malinga will now be serving the Rajasthan Royals as their bowling coach in IPL 2022.
