Former Indian off-spinner Ramesh Powar has been appointed as the new bowling coach of India A. The contract for Powar is on a short-term basis. He will only be a part of the staff for India’s A’s series against South Africa A. India A will take on the visitors in 5 one-days and 2 four-day matches.

He had big differences with senior player Mithali Raj, who was dropped from the U-19 World Cup semi-final. Raj in a letter had accused Powar of trying to sabotage her career. In response, Powar stated that Raj threated to retire if she wasn’t allowed to bat in her preferred position as an opener.

After the events, the BCCI decided to replace Powar as the coach despite support from other senior members of the squad. Both Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana had written letters to the BCCI in support of Powar. He was replaced at the helm by WV Raman.

Powar has recently been involved in various BCCI coaching programmes. He was a part of elite coaches orientation programme conducted by the NCA. He was also the coach of the U-19 boys’ camp held in Dharamshala.
