Ashes 2023: English crowd mocks Carey with hilarious chants

It has been a gripping third Ashes Test so far, with both Australia and England getting wrapped in their first innings within a day each. However, when the Headingley game was about to start, there was much noise about how the crowds are going to back the home side. Moreover, how they will treat Australian players when they take the field with the aim of sealing the coveted Ashes 2023 series. Interestingly, there was the buzz initially that the English crowd maintained decorum, unlike the Lord’s spectators.

In the same vein, during Australia’s first innings, post the dismissal of the visiting skipper, Pat Cummins, Alex Carey, the talented stumper-batter made a walk to the crease. The moment he stepped out of the pavilion, the crowd at Headingly started booing him. That was not all. Furthermore, they started a hilarious chant for the Australian after Carey came onto the pitch. Notably, the Aussie had stumped Jonny Bairstow in a controversial manner which triggered English fans to target him.

“Shoes off if you hate Carey,” the crowd chanted loudly.

Notably, during the act, some English spectators even took off their shoes and raised them in the air while pointing towards Alex Carey. Meanwhile, Carey did not have the best of starts to his innings as soon after he was dropped by the England veteran Joe Root while he was batting on just five runs. Despite getting another chance, the Australian could not make the most of it as the batting unit collapsed like a deck of cards. The visitors were 240/5 at one stage but within 23 runs they lost five wickets. As a result, Australia got folded for 263 in their first innings.
