Australia’s three lowest Test totals against India

Australia and India are regarded as two of the fiercest rivals in world cricket. Whenever the cricketing powerhouses have locked horns in any format of the sport, it is pure entertainment for the fans. The banter, the sledging, the duels and the impressive performances are what make up for the high-octane clash between these sides. Australia and India are currently in the midst of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy wherein the latter has already taken the lead 1-0 in the four-match series. Since the inception of the BGT, the two sides have produced some scintillating matches. In this piece, we take a look at Australia’s top three lowest totals against India in the red-ball format-

93, Mumbai 2004

In the 2004 tour of India, the mighty Aussies bundled out for mere 93 runs in the final innings of the contest. Australia responded with 203 runs to India’s 104 in the first innings. However, the latter scored 205 in the second innings to hand a target of 107 runs. Despite the low target, Harbhajan Singh took the onus of jolting the rival batting line-up. He returned a five-wicket haul which, coupled with Murali Kartik’s three-wicket haul, helped India seal the contest.

91, Nagpur 2023

The first Test of the ongoing series saw Australia register one of their lowest totals of all time against India. The match which took place at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur, which was under much discussion for the pitch. Despite this, the home side dazzled both with the bat and with the ball as the visitors were left with little to no response. The side skittled out for just 91 runs on the third day to hand a massive win by an innings and 132 runs.

83, Melbourne 1981

In 1981, Melbourne, Australia posted their lowest score against India in the third Test of the series. India put up a target of 143 after Australia had taken the first-innings lead. India great Kapil Dev cleaned them up with the five-wicket haul which took the game away from the Aussies. Dilip Doshi-Karsan Ghavri took two wickets each to wrap up the contest as Australia were all out for 83 runs.
