Hobart Hurricanes have announced the signing of Australia batsman Peter Handscomb ahead of the Big Bash League 10. The tournament kick starts on December 3 at the Adelaide Oval.

“Thrilled to have Pete”

With the retirement of George Bailey last season, the Hurricanes have roped in Handscomb to fill the void and boost the middle order. The 29-year-old was part of the Melbourne Stars for eight BBL editions starting from 2012. He was one of the few batsmen to score a century in the premier T20 tournament.

“We’re thrilled to have Pete join the Hurricanes for this season of Big Bash”, said Scott Barnes, General Manager of Hobart Hurricanes.

“There will be a number of first-time Hurricanes this season and we’re confident that the mix of youth and experience will see us through to the finals for another season.”

“His experience and tenacity at the crease is well known, and for him to be in purple this season provides another level of confidence to our batting line-up and overall team leadership.”

Born in Victoria, Handscomb went on to make his first-class debut for Victoria in 2011. His prolific run-scoring for Victoria finally earned him a Test call-up in 2016. A middle-order batsman with a unique technique, Handscomb quickly adapted to the big stage, scoring a maiden Test hundred in only his second outing. In his first seven Test innings, the Victorian had not been dismissed for a score below 50 even once.

“I had a good chat with some of the boys I’d played with before, so I’m keen to get down there and play with those guys,” Handscomb said upon his signing.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to potentially bat in the top four on a beautiful wicket at a nice ground, it’s exciting to be able to come to Hobart and show what I can do.”
