Birthday special: Andrew Flintoff – One of England’s best all-rounders

Flintoff Akram

English presenter and former international cricketer, Andrew Flintoff, is hailed as one of the best all-rounders to have blessed the cricket of England country. Flintoff shined in all three formats of the game as he plied his trade as a middle-order batsman and fast-medium pacer. He also did justice to his role of a fielder as he remained fierce while being in action at slips. He was constantly rated among the top all-rounders of the world in both ODIs and Tests by ICC.

Just after his debut in 1998, he became an integral part of his side. A feather on his cap of achievements was added when he bagged the player of the series title in the 2005 Ashes. Appreciating his consistent contributions for the team, he was later assigned the role of the skipper of the English team. He bid adieu to the purest form of the game at the end of the 2009 Ashes series and from other forms of the game in the next year.

It was in 2014 when the ace all-rounder walked out of retirement to play T20 cricket for Lancashire. Subsequently, he was signed by Brisbane Heat to ply his trade in Australia T20 league Big Bash for the 2014-15 season. Since his retirement, he has been involved in numerous projects, which included designing his own fashion brand.

Flintoff has 168 wickets in the ODI format and 219 Test scalps in his kitty. He also managed to score 2975 runs in the ODI format for his nation. He also holds the English record for the most sixes in Test cricket which he achieved by eclipsing Ian Botham’s record. He remains to be one of the only eight players to be on the honours board at Lord’s in both batting and bowling categories.

He was also involved in a heated argument with Yuvraj Singh while India was playing against England in T20 World Cup 2007. It was after this argument that Yuvraj Singh smashed the historic six sixes in an over of Stuart Broad.
