Birthday special: Jhulan Goswami – One of the greatest pacers in women’s cricket

Jhulan Goswami

Indian international cricketer and former skipper of the women’s national cricket team Jhulan Goswami has etched her name brilliantly in the world of women’s cricket. Her fierce bowling style combined with her impressive tall stature keeps even the finest batters of the world in fear. Right-arm medium-fast bowler, Goswami, is deemed as one of the greatest pacers of all time. She is also widely recognized as one of the fastest in the world of women’s cricket to date.

She became the faster contemporary bowler when Cathryn Fitzpatrick decided to hang her boots. She has already bid adieu to the world of women T20Is back in August 2018. Talking of accolades in her bag, she won the ICC Women’s Player of the Year award in 2007 and bagged the M.A. Chidambaram Trophy for ‘Best Women’s Cricketer’ in 2011. Jhulan topped the charts of ICC Women’s ODI bowling rankings in January 2016.

The star pacer of India stepped into the shoes of a skipper in 2008 when she took off the responsibility of Mithali Raj’s shoulder. She held it till 2011 and led the women’s team in 25 ODIs in due course of time. In 2010, she was honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award, and in 2012, came another feather in her cap. She became the second Indian women cricketer to be honoured with Padma Shri after Diana Edulji.

Jhulan is leading wicket-taker in WODIs

Goswami has 40 wickets in 10 Test matches and 225 wickets in 182 WODIs she has been part of. In 2017, she became the leading wicket-taker in WODIs when she grabbed her 181st scalp against South Africa at PUK Oval, Potchefstroom, and surpassed Cathryn Fitzpatrick. She was part of the national team that reached the finals of the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2017. However, it was not their day as they lost England women’s side by just nine runs.

Jhulan has revealed that her biopic is in making with the title ‘Chakdaha Express.’ It will trace her career’s journey right from nets in Kolkata to Lord’s in London, where her team saw the face of loss in WC 2017 against England. The biopic is already in process and will be done under the expertise of Sushanta Das. In September 2018, she touched an impressive milestone of bagging her 300th dismissal against Sri Lanka in international cricket.
