Birthday special: Roger Binny – 3 most memorable performances of Indian all-rounder

Former India cricketer Roger Binny is celebrating his 67th birthday today. He played a total of 27 Tests and 72 ODIs for the country including World Cup 1983 matches. Overall, he picked up 124 wickets in international cricket. In this article, we will be listing out the three best performances of his career.

27 & 3/48 against West Indies, World Cup 1983

This was India’s first match in World Cup 1983, and that too against two-time champions West Indies. India were asked to bat first after losing the toss, and they put up a big total of 262/8 in 60 overs. Yashpal Sharma was the top scorer for the team with 89 runs coming off his bat in 120 balls. Roger Binny also made a vital contribution of 27 runs off 38 balls lower down the order.

Chasing this total, West Indies were bundled out for 228 runs in 54.1 overs. Binny and Kapil Dev did a brilliant job with the ball taking three wickets each. India started their World Cup campaign with a 34-run win in this match.

This was the second Test of India tour of England in 1986. India scored 272 runs in the first innings after opting to bat first. Dilip Vengsarkar played a fine knock of 61 runs off 153 balls. In response to this, England were dismissed for only 102 runs in 45.1 overs. Roger Binny picked up 5 wickets for 40 runs in his 13 overs for India.

This match against Australia was a must-win for India, and Roger Binny rose to the occasion. Batting first, India scored 247 runs with many batters chipping in with small contributions. In response to India’s total, Australia were dismissed for only 129 runs.

Binny and Madan Lal bowled superb spells taking 4 wickets each in the match. With a 118-run win, India advanced to the semi-finals of the World Cup. They eventually won the trophy by defeating West Indies in the final.
