Champion leaders: Captains with most number of trophies in T20 cricket

MS Dhoni

The T20 format of cricket can be considered as one of the most exciting and favoured formats of the gentlemen’s game. The shortest format of the game witnesses a lot of audience and fans due to its fast-paced actions and twists and turns. Many cricketers have been making their name in T20 format by shining in the various T20 leagues organised by different cricket boards across the globe.

Though the game is of only 20 overs, to become a champion side, a team needs a quality leader. Since the inception of T20 in 2003, there have been many captains who have had a successful run in this format and have taken their respective teams towards victory more than once.

In this article, let’s discuss the captains with the most number of trophies in T20 cricket.

Simon Katich – 3

Though the former Australian batsman Simon Katich didn’t get to play T20 international cricket, he had done wonders in the domestic circuit. He played more than 100 games, including a couple of BBL seasons. Katich was known as one of the most successful captains of his time in the domestic T20 Leagues. In 2008-09 Big Bash League he led New South Wales to their first T20 title. Then, in 2010, Katich took NSW to the next level by winning the inaugural edition of Champions League T20. This was followed by the batsman guiding the Perth Scorchers to glory in 2013-14 BBL.

Daren Sammy – 3

The West Indies great Daren Sammy is responsible for making the West Indies cricket World Champions two times. More than his cricketing ability, Sammy earned a name in the world of cricket for his leadership skills. In both the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cups, Sammy showed how a captain can change the fortunes of a muddled team. Since then, he has been doing the same things for the other T20 franchises as he led the PSL franchise Peshawar Zalmi to their maiden title in 2017.

Mashrafe Mortaza – 4

The only Bangladeshi cricketer to feature in this list, Mashrafe Mortaza has been one of the most successful captains in T20 along with playing a role of fierce bowler for his team. Mortaza has showcased his leadership skills in the Bangladesh Premier League by claiming the title a total of four times. In the first two editions of the league, Mashrafe Mortaza helped his team Dhaka Gladiators to clinch two consecutive titles. Then, in the 2015-16 session, he guided his new team Comilla Victorians towards their maiden win before clinching the title again in 2017-18 with Rangpur Riders alongside him.

Rohit Sharma – 5

IPL franchise Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma can be termed as a beast in the shortest format of the game. Along with being the highest run-getter for India in T20 cricket, Rohit is also hailed as one of the best captains. Rohit came into limelight in 2013 when he took MI towards their maiden title victory in the T20 extravaganza. The winning spree continued as the Mumbaikar took his IPL Team to Champions League glory in the same year. Since then, there is no looking back for both the Mumbai franchise and Rohit as they again emerged winners in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

MS Dhoni – 6

There is no match to the former Indian captain MS Dhoni in captaincy, especially in the limited-overs format of cricket. Right from 2007 to 2020, Dhoni has brought many laurels for his team and country in T20 cricket. The Ranchi stalwart started his journey in the shortest format of the game by winning the inaugural edition of ICC T20 World Cup in 2007. MS continued the winning spree with his IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings as he headed the Yellow Army to unparalleled heights.
