A historic event took place in India on Thursday (July 22) as Smt. Draupadi Murmu, the modest politician who entered politics as an Odisha councilor, became the first ever tribal person and the country’s second woman, to be elected as the President of the nation. The incumbent NDA’s nominee for the top position triumphed in the election by a comfortable majority of more than 63% votes.

Social media was flooded with wishes pouring in from all around, and the Indian cricketing fraternity also wished the newly elected President the best for her future endeavours. Sachin Tendulkar, Mithali Raj, Dinesh Karthik, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, and Yuvraj Singh were a few among the many other well-wishers.

The 64-year-old woman who will succeed Ram Nath Kovind as India’s 15th president would also be the nation’s first president born after Independence as India will get its youngest leader on July 25, when she will be sworn in. The unassuming politician is thought to be extremely spiritual and an adept user of the Brahma Kumaris’ meditation practices, a movement she adopted after losing her husband, two sons, mother, and brother in the course of just six years, spanning 2009 to 2015.

From 2000 to 2004, she worked her way up to become a minister in the BJD-BJP coalition government of Odisha. She served as district president up until April 2015, when she was named governor of Jharkhand. She retained this position through the end of 2021.

Draupadi Murmu ran for the Rairangpur Assembly seat in 2014 but was defeated by the BJD candidate. And after finishing her term as governor of Jharkhand, she focused on social work in Rairangpur.
