CWC 2019: SA vs WI – Rain plays spoilsport, teams share points

Southampton Cricket Stadium

South Africa vs West Indies has become the second match during the 2019 World Cup which hasn’t seen a result due to persistent rain showers in Southampton. Only 7.3 overs of play was possible at the Ageas Bowl before intermittent showers meant that no further play was possible.

The weather department had already predicted showers throughout the day but when the two captains walked out for the toss on time, there was hope that the rain Gods would stay away. West Indian skipper Jason Holder had won the toss and had elected to field first.

In the 7.3 overs of play, the Windies seamers had managed to rock the South African top order, claiming two wickets. The Proteas had only managed to score 29 runs, losing the struggling Hashim Amla for 6 and Aiden Markram for 5. Quinton de Kock was batting on the crease at a score of 17 and he was joined by skipper Faf du Plessis who had not opened his account. Sheldon Cottrell had claimed both the wickets for the Windies.

The no-result means that both the teams will share 1 point each. South Africa have now opened their account with the solitary point, moving off the bottom of the table. The Windies now have 3 points in three matches and are firmly in the hunt for a semi-final spot, being positioned 5th on the table.

While the Windies will next face off against hosts England on June 14 at the same venue, South Africa will face-off against Afghanistan on June 15 at Cardiff.
