DC vs MI Review – Mumbai open their account with a 6-wicket win over Delhi

Mumbai Indians registered their maiden win in the Indian Premier League 2023. They beat the struggling Delhi Capitals in a last-ball thriller by six wickets in the 16th match on April 11. David Warner scored his third fifty of the season, while Axar Patel smashed his maiden half-century to help Delhi score 172/10 batting first. Then captain Rohit Sharma led by example by smashing 65 off 45 to help Mumbai win two crucial points.

Rohit won the toss for Mumbai and elected to bowl first at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Prithvi Shaw’s struggles continued as the youngster was dismissed by Hrithik Shokeen for just 15 runs in the fourth over. But Warner pulled off his third fifty from four innings this season. Manish Pandey added crucial 26 off 18 to put Delhi on track.

Piyush Chawla took three wickets in the middle overs to add a little pressure on Delhi’s innings but Axar Patel joined and added 67 runs for the sixth wicket Axar smashed 54 off just 25 to record his first-ever IPL fifty before getting caught off Jason Behrendorff in the 19th over. Behrendorff totally stopped Delhi’s momentum with two more wickets in the same over. Then, Riley Meredith bowled out Anrich Nortje in the next over to bowl out Delhi.

While chasing, openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan pulled off a quick 71-run stand. Kishan was unfortunate to get run out while batting at 31 off 26 but Rohit continued the momentum by scoring his first fifty in last 25 IPL innings.

Rohit and Tilak Varma produced another crucial partnership of 70 runs for the second wicket to drag Mumbai closer to the target but Mukesh Kumar dismissed Tilak and Suryakumar Yadav on the back-to-back deliveries to raise Delhi’s hopes. Mustafizur dismissed Rohit in the next over as Delhi bowlers made a great comeback in the game. Nortje was impressive with his last six deliveries. But, Tim David and Cameron Green managed to run two runs on the last ball.

Jason Behrendorff

The Australian left-arm pacer dismissed both Axar Patel and David Warner in the 19th over. Behrendorff also dismissed Abishek Porel in the same over as Mumbai totally made a late comeback to bowl out Delhi.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit played a captain’s knock of 65 runs with the help of six fours and four sixes. He ended his poor form and will be looking to build up on this innings for the remainder of the season.

What’s next for both teams?

Mumbai Indians next face Kolkata Knight Riders on April 16 at home. While Delhi Capitals will be against Royal Challengers Bangalore in an away game a day before (April 15)
