Fastest ODI ton by a West Indies batter

The West Indies team has produced some exceptional players who have entertained fans both with the bat and with the ball. From Clive Llyod to Chris Gayle, Malcolm Marshall to Kemar Roach, the Windies have been a dominant force for a long time in world cricket courtesy of their impressive performances. In the ODIs, there have been quite a few Caribbean batters who have taken the bowling unit by storm and carved out marvellous innings. With that said, we take a look at the top three Windies batters with the fastest ton in ODIs-

3. Nicholas Pooran

After a solid start by the top-order in the World Cup Qualifier match against Netherlands, Nicholas Pooran slammed the third-fastest ton by a Caribbean batter in the ODIs. The southpaw smashed an unbeaten 100 off just 63 balls, featuring eight fours and six sixes. He concluded his innings at an unbeaten 104 runs which propelled the Windies to get 374. The Dutch side got on level terms in a thrilling chase and took the match to the Super Over, which they won eventually to script one of the biggest upsets in cricket history.

2. Chris Gayle | 55 balls

England posted a humongous 418 runs courtesy of Jos Buttler’s 150 and skipper Eoin Morgan’s 103 in the fourth ODI in 2019 against West Indies. However, explosive hitter Chris Gayle got to his lethal best during the chase as he clobbered 14 sixes and 11 fours in his 162 off 97. His thunderous innings included him notching up his century in mere 55 deliveries. However, his blistering knock came to a conclusion after Ben Stokes bowled him out, after which the Windies lost the contest by 29 runs.

1. Brian Lara | 45 balls

In 1999, during West Indies’ tour of Bangladesh, Brian Lara’s blitzkrieg blew the home side away as he registered a magnificent century. Batting first, Lara scored his ton off just 45 balls and concluded his innings with a score of 117 runs off 62. His marvellous knock featured 18 fours and four sixes, making him the quickest Windies centurion. He was also adjudged Player of the Match in West Indies’ 109-run win against Bangladesh.
