Flashback: Best ODI bowling figures by an Indian

Bowler steps onto the field to deliver the best performance for his team irrespective of the format and the series. Every bowler looks for wickets and containing runs for his side while bowling on the 22 yards. The Asian giants, India, played their debut one-day international match 48 years back in July 1974 but the best individual bowling performance came 40 years surprisingly from Stuart Binny.

India all-rounder Stuart Binny unexpectedly holds the record for the best bowling figures for India in the one-day international format. The right-arm medium bowler achieved the feat of six wickets for just four runs against Bangladesh in Mirpur in the year 2014.

Team India toured Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series in June 2014. The Men in Blue registered victory in the opening fixture and the second match turned out to be a dream outing for the team and especially, Binny, who terrorized the Bangladeshi batting line-up.

The hosts batted first in a rain-curtailed encounter that got reduced to 41 overs per side. The visitors got bundled cheaply for just 105 as they got blown away by pacer Taskin Ahmed. The seam bowler took five wickets for 28 runs in eight overs while Mashrafe Mortaza also bagged two wickets.

Suresh Raina, the Indian captain, top-scored for his side with 27 runs. In reply, what looked like a straightforward victory for the home side turned out to be an embarrassment for Mushfiqur Rahim and his men courtesy of Binny’s sensational spell.

Binny took 6/4 in 4.4 overs which also included two maidens at an economy rate of 0.85 as Bangladesh got bowled out for a paltry 58, their joint-lowest total in the ODI format. His spell included crucial wickets for skipper Rahim and experienced campaigner Mahmudullah. India won the game by 47 runs (DL) and the series 2-0 with Binny grabbing the Player of the Match award.

Having made his debut in the format against New Zealand in 2014, Binny played 14 ODIs for India and took 20 wickets at an average of 21.95. He also scored 230 runs in 11 innings an average of 28.75 with one half-century. His last appearance in the 50-overs format came against South Africa in Kanpur in the year 2015.
