Flashback: Last hat-tricks in all three formats
A hat-trick is not a common occurrence in cricket. Taking three wickets in three balls is an event that is rare. And, over the course of international cricket, a total of 114 hat tricks have been taken in total. Let’s take a look at the last hat-trick that was taken in each format of the game.
Tests – Keshav Maharaj
The latest hat-trick in Test cricket was taken in June 2021. In the contest between South Africa and West Indies, Keshav Maharaj scalped a hat trick in the 37th over of the West Indies’ second innings. Kieran Powel, Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva were his victims. Maharaj scalped a five-wicket haul in the second innings and played a pivotal role in helping the South African side thrash the West Indies by 158 runs.
ODIs – Kuldeep Yadav
India’s Kuldeep Yadav took the latest hat trick in ODI cricket, which came on 18th December 2019. India posted a mammoth total of 387/5 on the board on the back of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul’s centuries. During the West Indies’ innings, Kuldeep Yadav hogged the spotlight, as he picked up a hat trick in the 33rd over of the innings. The left-arm spinner finished with a three-wicket haul, as India thrashed their opponents by a margin of 107 runs.
T20Is – Jason Holder
Jason Holder took the last hat trick in T20I cricket just a couple of months ago, against the England outfit on 30th January 2022. West Indies posted a huge total of 179/4 on the board, and the England side needed 20 runs off the final over. And, that is when Holder weaved his magic, and scalped four wickets in four balls. England were bowled out for just 162, as the ‘Men in Maroon’ beat their opponents by 17 runs to seal the match.
