GT vs LSG Review – Gujarat continue their dominance as LSG falter

Gujarat Titans handed a chastening defeat to Lucknow Super Giants in a high-scoring affair in Ahmedabad. The defending champions won the match by a whopping margin of 56 runs after posting a mammoth 227 runs in the first innings on the back of glorious knocks from Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill.

GT’s Wriddhiman Saha came out all guns blazing on a batting paradise in Ahmedabad and took on the LSG bowlers, especially pacer Mohsin Khan in the initial stages to register GT’s highest powerplay score in the IPL while his opening partner, Shubman Gill joined the party after the powerplay as the two openers compiled an explosive stand of 142 runs.

Even though the LSG bowlers got rid of Saha, there was no respite Gill continued the assault. He received valiant support from Hardik Pandya and David Miller, who chipped in with brisk cameos. However, the stylish opener was left stranded at 94 as the home side posted their highest total in IPL history.

Chasing a record total, LSG’s new opening pair of Quinton de Kock and Kyle Mayers wasted no time in asserting their dominance. The duo were ruthless in the powerplay, not sparing even Rashid Khan. However, the Afghan star took an absolute blinder to put an end to the southpaw’s onslaught.

Mayer’s dismissal saw the home side wrestle control of the match as GT bowlers started to chip in with quiet overs. de Kock, who was looking in ominous touch, was bowled around his legs by Rashid as the hosts started to dominate proceedings in the middle overs. Hardik Pandya’s bowlers kept chipping away at the wickets as LSG fell well short of the target.

Best performers of the match:

Shubman Gill

Gill took his time in the initial stage of his innings but went into overdrive after getting his eye in, smashing seven maximums, the most by a GT batter in an IPL innings, during his glittering 94-run innings.

Mohit Sharma

Mohit Sharma was introduced into the attack with Mayers and de Kock going berserk at the top of the innings, but he repaid the trust of his skipper by getting rid of the dangerous Caribbean batter on just his second delivery in the match. He returned with magnificent figures of 4/29 on a batting-friendly surface.

What next for both sides:

GT play Mumbai Indians on May 12 in Mumbai while LSG will be up against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad the next day.
