India’s three most memorable moments at Lord’s

The game of cricket is not just enjoyed and celebrated around the globe but is also worshipped in many countries. Watching a classic match at Lord’s would probably be something coming out of a child’s fairy tale for the cricket fans. Playing cricket at the Lord’s is in itself a special moment for any cricketer and performing well there is just an added feather in the cap for the team.

Lifting the World Cup at the Lord’s Balcony in 1983 

Years pass by, but this triumph of India is etched into the hearts of every cricket on-looker. A World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for a cricketer, and lifting it at the home of cricket just garners the audacity of it. The Kapil Dev-led side was considered to be the underdogs of the tournament. In the finals, West Indies looked all pumped up to exude their domination by aiming to win their third consecutive title, but India’s Madan Lal and Amarnath took the charge with the ball as India won the match by 43 runs.

India’s first Test victory at Lord’s- June 10, 1986 

Cricket has evolved a lot over time, but the parent format of the game has a special place in the hearts of all the fans. Owing to Chetan Sharma’s five-wicket haul, England was bowled out at 294. A belligerent unbeaten 126 by Dilip Vengsarkar and Mohinder Amarnath’s 69 helped India to take a lead of 47 runs. Further, the hosts were bundled for 180 runs and India chased down the target of 134 and won by 5 wickets to secure their first Test win at Lord’s.

Chasing a total of 326 the Indian team was reduced to 146-5 in the 24th over. With the likes of Ganguly, Sehwag, Dravid, and Tendulkar having walked back to the pavilion, victory seemed as remote as a pool in a desert. But in cricket, it doesn’t take much time for the wheels to turn. Yuvraj Singh (69 off 63 balls) and Mohammad Kaif (87* off 75 balls) put up a partnership of 121 runs and fashioned India’s victory. This was followed by Ganguly waving his shirt standing on the Lord’s balcony.
