IPL 2020 Final: Dominant Mumbai Indians thump Delhi Capitals to clinch fifth title

Defending champions Mumbai Indians created history on Sunday (November 10) by winning their fifth IPL title with a five-wicket win over Delhi Capitals. Mumbai were a notch above all the other teams throughout the tournament and fittingly ended up as deserving winners. They also became the second team after CSK to defend their title.

Earlier, Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bat first in the all-important finale. But they got off to a poor start thanks to Trent Boult’s sensational opening spell. After being reduced to 22/3, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were left with a little too much to do. The duo though did well by adding 96 runs for the fourth wicket. After 15 overs, the stage was set for them to go big in the death overs.

But Pant’s wicket and some exceptional bowling from Jasprit Bumrah, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Boult restricted Delhi to 156 in their 20 overs. Iyer and Pant scored half-centuries but they never got the final push needed to post a match-winning total.

A one-sided chase

The chase was a tricky one but not for MI’s openers. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock added 45 runs in quick time and despite the latter getting out, the MI captain continued playing his shots. He also scored a half-century finding his groove back at the perfect time.

Rohit got out after scoring 68 runs but by then, the result was a mere formality in the game. Ishan Kishan once again played a vital role and got the team over the line in 19th over with five wickets in hand.

Turning Point

Boult’s opening spell – The New Zealand pacer was simply sensational with the new ball and for the umpteenth time, he toyed with the DC top order. He nipped out Marcus Stoinis off the very first ball of the match and then bluffed Ajinkya Rahane in his next over to leave DC reeling. The new-ball spell made a massive difference in the end as a slow start hurt the Capitals.
