IPL 2021 Auction: 3 cricketers Delhi Capitals are likely to release

Woakes

Delhi Capitals have made rapid progress in the past two editions of the IPL from not winning a playoff match to nearly winning the title. The Delhi franchise won a playoff match for the first time in the 2019 season and qualified to the final for the first time in 2020 where they lost to Mumbai Indians. With a young and balanced squad, the Capitals would look to better their performance in 2021.

Here are the three players whom Delhi Capitals might release from contract ahead of the IPL 2021:

Mohit Sharma:

The Indian pacer Mohit Sharma’s IPL campaign in 2020 lasted one match where he conceded 45 runs. Even in 2019, he got to play only one match and had not played anything else in those two years in professional cricket. With the likes of Ishant Sharma, Avesh Khan, Tushar Deshpande and Harshal Patel in the Delhi squad, Mohit might find the axe due to his recent form. Mohit costs only 50 lakhs INR but it will help the franchise to find a backup in the spin and batting department.

Jason Roy:

Jason Roy was bought by Delhi Capitals for only 1.5 crore INR for the 2020 season. However, Daniel Sams was roped in as a replacement player after the English batsman quit owing to personal reasons. Roy hasn’t been able to put on big scores consistently even since the lockdown and is unlikely to get into the Delhi’s batting line-up which is already a top-heavy one. Leaving Roy out will help Delhi Capitals to retain his replacement player Sams who has shown gradual improvement with the bat in the ongoing BBL edition.

Chris Woakes:

Much like the case of Jason Roy, another England player Chris Woakes opted out ahead of the IPL 2020 forcing Delhi franchise to bring in Anrich Nortje. The South African pacer turned out to be an asset to the DC’s bowling unit alongside Kagiso Rabada, powering them to the final. Hence, it will be a no-brainer for the Capitals to leave out Woakes and keep Nortje in the squad.
