IPL 2021: Five mega records which can be made this season

MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has completely changed the dynamics of the game over the years. It has also impacted the way cricket is being played in different countries. The 14th season of the IPL is all set to commence from 9th April 2021. Mumbai Indians will face Royal Challengers Bangalore in the inaugural match. There are some milestones that are yet to be achieved in the IPL. In this article, let us take a look at the five big records which can be made in IPL 2021.

5. Kohli’s eye on 6000 IPL runs

Virat Kohli has scored 5878 runs in 184 IPL innings so far at an average of 38.16 and a strike rate of 130.73. He needs 122 more runs to become the first-ever player to complete 6000 runs in IPL cricket. He has smashed 5 centuries and 39 half-centuries in his IPL career. The Indian captain has indicated that he will be opening the batting for the Bangalore IPL side.

4. Can Dhoni make it to his 10th IPL final?

MS Dhoni has played 9 IPL finals till now, out of which 8 were for CSK and 1 was for RPS. If the CSK side reaches the summit clash of IPL 2021, Dhoni will become the first player to feature in 10 IPL finals. He played his maiden final in 2008 where Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals clinched the title.

3. Dhawan nearing 5000 IPL runs

Shikhar Dhawan has so far scored 4790 runs as an opener in IPL. He has accumulated these runs at an average of 34.71. If Dhawan is successful in scoring 210 runs as Delhi Capitals’ opener in IPL 2021, he will become the first opener to complete 5000 IPL runs. The left-hander smashed twin centuries in last year’s IPL.

2. Can the 1000-run mark be crossed?

The record for the most runs scored in an IPL season belongs to Virat Kohli. He aggregated 973 runs in IPL 2016, winning the orange cap that season. However, there are some contenders including KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli himself, who can breach the 1000-run mark in this IPL season. It will be interesting to see if this mega record can be overhauled.

1. Captaincy milestone for MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni is all set to create a new milestone as a captain in IPL 2021. He has played 188 matches as a skipper till now. This season, Dhoni can become the first captain to lead an IPL franchise in 200 IPL matches. He has led Chennai Super Kings with great success from the inaugural season.
