IPL 2021: Three innovative rules that will the torunament very exciting

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most followed T20 league in the world. Fans throng various Indian venues in the summer months of April and May to vociferously cheer for their respective sides, and almost every single match sees a capacity crowd turned up. So, how would it be, if we tweaked the IPL rules a little bit, to make it more interesting? In this article, let us look at 3 rule changes that can be implemented in the 2021 IPL edition.

3) Super Sub Rule

Well, if you have been following cricket for a long time, you will be familiar with this rule. It was a rule that was in existence in 2005, for ODI cricket but was scrapped within a year of its introduction. So, this rule says that a team can select a player and nominate him as the SuperSub before the toss. And, during the game, they can substitute the Super Sub, with another player in the playing XI. Now, with the IPL being such a dynamic format, one player and a few overs can completely change the entire complexion of the game. This rule will make the IPL far more intriguing and enticing to watch.

2) One bowler can bowl an unlimited number of overs

Ok, so why not sprinkle an element of Test cricket into the IPL as well. Currently, one bowler can bowl a maximum of only 4 overs in the IPL. So, even if a bowler is in excellent rhythm and is picking wickets, he can only be allowed to bowl 24 legal deliveries. But then, how about allowing just one bowler to bowl an unlimited number of overs?

That is what happens in Test cricket, where a particular bowler can roll his arm over for as many overs as he can. There is already a lot of talk about how cricket is turning in favour of the batsman, and this rule can bring about a balance in the sport. After all, if a batsman can bat as many deliveries as he wants in an IPL game, why can’t the bowler do the same?

1) -5 runs for a maiden over

This is another change that can be a massive success in the IPL. There are a few occasions where a batsman would not be able to score freely off a particular bowler and will decide to play him out and target other bowlers. And, there are a few occasions where a bowler would deliver a maiden over in the IPL. But then, how would it be, if the batsman is penalized for playing out a maiden over, and 5 runs are docked from the score?

Now, this would start creating pressure on a batsman even if he plays out three or four dot balls, as he would be forced to score runs and take risks. And surely, it would make it more exciting for the audience, isn’t it?
