IPL 2022: Sunrisers Hyderabad – SWOT Analysis

Kane Williamson

2016 IPL champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) decided to retain Kane Williamson, Umran Malik, and Abdul Samad ahead of the mega auction. 23 players including 15 Indians and 8 overseas form the SRH squad after the big auction day. They spent a total of INR 89.90 crores with a remaining budget of INR 10 lakhs. Nicholas Pooran turned out to be the most expensive buy for the franchise for INR 10.75 crores. In this article, let’s do a SWOT on the SRH side.

Strengths

SRH showed their loyalty and put faith in buying back Bhuvneshwar Kumar for INR 4.2 crores. Their fast bowling stocks consist of Kumar, Umran Malik, T Natarajan, Kartik Tyagi, and Marco Jansen. SRH was also known as a bowling side over the years and this year is no different. They will miss their premier and world’s best T20 spinner Rashid Khan but the fast bowlers in the side still make them look a good side.

Weaknesses

David Warner used to provide blistering starts to SRH in all these seasons but they could miss that now. Muthiah Muralitharan declared that Williamson will be opening the batting with Abhishek Sharma.  A quickfire start is what they might miss and also the absence of star spinner Rashid Khan. They have added Washington Sundar, Shreyas Gopal, and Jagadeesha Suchith as their spinners but all of them haven’t really made a proper mark in the IPL yet. Sundar is economical but may not always give wickets the way Rashid Khan used to provide.

Opportunities

It’s time youngsters Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad come to the party and start delivering. SRH bought back Garg and Sharma and both have the opportunity to perform for the team now. In the last two seasons, both have played a total of 35 games between them scoring just 374 runs for SRH. Sharma opening with Williamson has a chance to cement his place by giving the team a good start.

Threats

Williamson and Rahul Tripathi will be the ones to score most of the runs. They have Aiden Markram but he is just one season old and looking at Nicholas Pooran’s disastrous record in the last IPL it is skipper Kane and the experienced Rahul who look the only ones to steer the ship for SRH.
