IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals Season Review – Glimpses of brilliance amid flop show

The absence of regular skipper Rishabh Pant was always going to be a big blow to the Delhi Capitals, but the Delhi-based outfit never got going in the 16th edition of the competition. Veteran Aussie opener David Warner, who was handed the responsibility of leading the side in IPL 2023, failed to galvanise the side as DC lost their first five matches under Warner’s captaincy.

Delhi Capitals’ season fizzled out after a demoralizing defeat against Chennai Super Kings in their last league fixture in front of their home crowd in Delhi. A couple of victories here and there helped the Capitals avoid the wooden spoon as they finished the season in ninth place with five wins and nine defeats.

What went right?

It took them a while to get going, but Delhi Capitals’ overseas players, including skipper David Warner did manage to land significant contributions to their side with the bat. Indian all-rounder Axar Patel also continued his tremendous rise in the batting department, finishing as the second-highest run-getter for his side this season.

What went wrong?

Prithvi Shaw’s horrendous run with the bat cost the Delhi Capitals dearly in the 16th edition of the tournament. His lean run, coupled with a lacklustre showing from other Indian batters like Manish Pandey hurt the team in the middle overs.

Highest run-getter- David Warner led from the front for his side scoring 516 runs in 14 matches at an average of 36.85, striking the ball at 131.63 with six half-centuries.

Highest wicket-tacker- Aussie all-rounder Mitchell Marsh scalped 12 wickets for his side in 9 matches, averaging 14.16 and going for 8.42 runs per over.

Delhi’s most memorable moment of this season, despite their underwhelming campaign, came against defending champions Gujarat Titans. David Warner’s side infiltrated Gujarat’s home ground, successfully defending a paltry total of 130 runs to complete a memorable victory.
