IPL 2023: Lucknow Super Giants SWOT Analysis

Lucknow Super Giants reinforced their squad for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League in the mini auction held in December 2022. They added several stars such as Nicholas Pooran, Romario Shepherd, Daniel Sams and Amit Mishra. After getting knocked out in the eliminator last season, the KL Rahul-led side will look to go one step ahead and claim their first title.

Strengths

Lucknow Super Giants have the likes of KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Ayush Badoni, Marcus Stoinis, Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda in their batting lineup which makes them one of the strongest batting sides of the competition. The inclusion of Nicholas Pooran will add more firepower to the batting.

Weaknesses

The bowling line-up of LSG did not look daunting last year due to the lack of international stars. They bought Amit Mishra, Daniel Sams, Jaydev Unadkat, Yash Thakur, and Naveen-ul-Haq in the mini-auction to strengthen their attack and bench strength. However, not having world-class bowlers in their squad can prove to be detrimental for them if things are not going smooth during the game.

Opportunities

Lucknow showed faith in the Indian domestic talent by picking them in the auction. Players such as Yash Thakur, Prerak Mankad, Swapnil Singh, and Yudhvir Charak will be eager to get a chance in the upcoming season. On the other hand, Ayush Badoni will look to continue their impressive performances from the last season.

Threats

In a decision which surprised the entire cricketing fraternity, Lucknow purchased Nicholas Pooran for a whopping INR 16 crore. The wicketkeeper batter has not put up remarkable performances in IPL so far. Hence, picking him for such a huge amount was a big gamble for Lucknow. In the 2022 season, he amassed 306 runs at an average of 38.25 and a strike rate of 144.34. In the upcoming season, Pooran will have to fire for Lucknow or the KL Rahul led-side will have the burden of carrying him in the team just for his potential.
