IPL: Best bowling figures for Indian bowlers on debut

Over the years, the Indian Premier League has given a platform to several Indian youngsters to make a name for themselves through their performances on the field. Every year, several unheard names take the tournament by storm with their marvellous performances. The 2023 edition as well has brought several youngsters to the fore with one of them being Suyash Sharma from KKR.

The wrist-spinner, hailing from Delhi, picked up 3/30 in four overs on his IPL debut against RCB in Match 9 and bamboozled the opposition with his subtle variations. The 19-year-old entered record books in his very first outing registering the sixth-best figures by an Indian bowler on IPL debut. As the KKR camp celebrates Suyash’s incredible achievement, let’s go on a trip down memory lane and find out the top three best bowling performances by Indian bowlers on their IPL debut:

3. Mayank Markande (3/23), MI vs CSK, Match 1, IPL 2018

The wrist-spinner made his debut at the age of 20 during the opening game of the 2018 edition against Chennai Super Kings. Defending a total of 165, the Punjab-born spinner came into the attack in the seventh over and picked up the prized scalp of Ambati Rayudu on the third ball itself. He further went on to pick the biggest wicket of all of MS Dhoni and Deepak Chahar to finish with figures of 3/23 in four overs. However, despite his brilliant spell, CSK went on to win the match by one wicket and one ball to spare.

2. Sandeep Sharma (3/21), KXIP (now Punjab Kings) vs SRH, Match 59, IPL 2013

The right-arm seamer from Punjab made his debut against SRH in Match 59 of the 2013 edition. The then 19-year-old was brought into the attack in the sixth over of the first innings and he picked up the wicket of Hanuma Vihari on his third delivery.  Sharma further dismissed Cameron White and Biplab Samantray off consecutive deliveries in his second over and finished his spell with figures of 3/21 in four overs to restrict Hyderabad to 150/7. However, Punjab went on to lose the match as their batters surrendered in front of SRH bowlers and could only reach 120/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

1. Amit Singh (3/9), RR vs KXIP (now Punjab Kings), Match 30, IPL 2009

The 27-year-old made his debut against KXIP during Match 30 of the 2009 edition of the tournament. Rajasthan were defending a massive total of 211 as Amit Singh started the proceeding for his side. He got RR off to a rollicking start picking up the wicket of Sunny Sohal on the first ball of the innings itself. He further dismissed Karan Goel in the same over and had a dream beginning to his IPL career. The Karnataka-born seamer further picked up the prized scalp of Yuvraj Singh and finished the match with figures of 3/9 in four overs. Courtesy of his magnificent spell, RR restricted Punjab to 133/8 and won the match by 78 runs.
