IPL: Most fours in a team innings

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed numerous high-octane clashes filled with action and drama. Teams put their best foot forward in order to obtain results in their favour. There have been numerous instances when a player single-handedly plays an instrumental innings either with the bat or with the ball to win the contest for the team. While the shortest format is regarded as the batters’ game, the top-tier league has seen certain players who have contributed immensely in a match, getting the boundaries and with this creating certain records. In this piece, we take a look at the most fours in a team innings in the IPL-

3. Lucknow Super Giants | vs Punjab Kings | 27 fours

In the 16th edition of the IPL, Lucknow Super Giants registered the highest total of the season, scoring 257 runs against Punjab Kings. The middle order fired in tandem as Kyle Mayers, Ayush Badoni, Marcus Stoinis, and Nicholas Pooran got 54, 43, 72, and 45 runs respectively. Impressively, Mayers and Pooran got seven boundaries each in their innings whereas Marcus Stoinis got six to his name among others to score as many as 27 boundaries in entirety. With this, LSG scored the third0most fours in an innings in the IPL.

2. Mumbai Indians | vs Sunrisers Hyderabad | 30 fours

In 2021, Mumbai Indians hammered Hyderabad for a humongous first innings total of 235 runs. Notably, Ishan Kishan scored 84 runs with as many as 11 boundaries and four maximums whereas Suryakumar Yadav got 82 off 40 balls, which featured 13 fours and three sixes. In total, Mumbai got 30 fours in the innings, making it the second most fours scored by a team in an IPL game, winning by 42 runs.

1. Delhi Daredevils | vs Gujarat Lions | 31 fours

Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) registered the most fours scored in an innings as they claimed the impressive record in 2017 against Gujarat Lions (now defunct). Batting first, the Lions got a mammoth 195 runs in their 20 overs of the contest. Shreyas Iyer played a brilliant knock for Delhi as he slammed 96 off 57 balls, which included 15 fours and two sixes. Delhi won the contest by two wickets and attained an impressive record as they got a record 31 fours in an innings in the IPL.
