IPL: Most sixes in 20th over

Chennai Super Kings suffered a five-wicket defeat in a last-over thriller against Gujarat Titans in their opening Indian Premier League 2023 match on March 31. But the four-time champions quickly returned to winning ways with a 12-run triumph over Lucknow Super Giants in the following game.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was on top of his game with quick fifties in both opening matches for the Super Kings. The in-form opener is already leading the scoring chart this season with 149 runs from two innings with the help of seven fours and 13 sixes.

He smashed nine maximums against Lucknow Super Giants in the last game and completed 50 sixes in IPL. Apart from Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ambati Rayudu, and Shivam Dube also entertained home fans at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, with combined seven sixes.

But fans cheered loudly when skipper MS Dhoni smashed two big sixes off in-from Mark Wood’s delivery in the innings’ last over. Dhoni’s finishing skills with big shots into the crowd are no new affair. He has been relentless when it comes to changing the course of the game in death overs. So, let’s take a look at the top three cricketers with the most sixes in 20th over in IPL tournaments so far.

3) 26 sixes – Ravindra Jadeja

The spin all-rounder has managed to hit just 90 sixes in IPL despite playing in 212 games so far. However, in the 20th over, Jadeja has smashed 26 sixes and is only seven behind the former Mumbai Indians cricketer and West Indies’ powerhouse  Kieron Pollard.

2) 33 sixes – Kieron Pollard

The Mumbai Indians stalwart dominated IPL tournaments with 223 sixes from just 171 innings and 33 of those maximums came in the 20th over. Notably, Pollard is among the few big names in IPL history to have recorded a majority of sixes and fours. The Caribbean star is currently part of Mumbai Indians’ coaching panel.

1) 55 sixes – MS Dhoni

The Chennai Super Kings skipper comfortably leads this record with amazing 55 sixes in the 20th over, 22 more than Kieron Pollard. Dhoni has smashed 232 sixes from 202 IPL games so far and is among the top five players with the most sixes in IPL. Dhoni’s all three sixes from the opening two games in IPL 2023 have come in the 20th over and he might be looking to add more to his record tally.
