IPL: Most wickets by spinners

Spinners tend to dominate on sub-continent pitches as they enjoy bowling in these conditions in Asia. Facing spin bowlers is always a tough ask for the batters irrespective of the format in these parts of the world. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), few high-quality spinners have excelled since the inception of the tournament as they have made their mark.

Let’s take a look at the most wickets picked up by the spinners in the IPL (Top 3):

  1. R Ashwin (158)

With 158 wickets, R Ashwin recently surpassed Piyush Chawla’s tally of 157 scalps as he has now picked up the third-most wickets by a spinner in the cash-rich league. Having made his IPL debut in the 2009 edition, Ashwin’s average is 28.86, and his strike rate is 24.8 in 182 innings. His economy rate is just 6.97, with the best figures of 4/34. The right-arm off-break bowler has played for five franchises namely Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.

  1. Amit Mishra (166)

Veteran Amit Mishra occupies the second position in this elite chart. Having played in the league since its inception way back in 2008, the leg-break bowler has snared 166 scalps in 154 innings at an average of 23.95 and a strike rate of 19.5 with an economy rate of7.35. Amit has picked up a four-wicket haul four times and a five-wicket haul once in his IPL career. He has represented three teams so far namely Deccan Charges, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals. The 40-year-old is in the Lucknow Super Giants squad for the current 2022 season.

  1. Yuzvendra Chahal (170)

By picking up four wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing edition, Yuzvendra Chahal went past Mishra’s tally of 166 wickets. He is now the leading wicket-taker amongst the spinners with 170 scalps in the history of the IPL. He made his debut in the 2013 campaign and since then, he averages 21.41 with a strike rate of 16.9 at an economy rate of 7.58. Chahal has also grabbed a four-wicket haul four times and a five-for once. He has played for Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Rajasthan Royals in the league.
