IPL: Three Most expensive overs in tournament history

The Indian Premier League has been entertaining fans for 15 years now, and it has been made possible by some sensational power-hitting by the batters. While the bowlers have also made their presence felt in the competition over the years, they are plagued by an off day every now and then. On that note, we take a look at the most expensive overs bowled in IPL history.

33 – Parvinder Awana vs CSK, 2014

Chasing a daunting total of 227 runs, Chennai Super Kings needed a miraculous batting performance against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and it almost came to fruition thanks to Suresh Raina’s mind-boggling assault. The southpaw took a liking to Punjab pacer Parvinder Awana, smashing his for 33 runs, including two sixes and five boundaries, in the sixth over of the chase, the second most expensive over in the IPL at that time. However, Raina’s dismissal after a 25-ball 87 saw Punjab prevail in a high-scoring affair.

35 – Daniel Sams vs KKR, 2022

It was a dream first appearance for Australian star pacer Pat Cummins in IPL 2022 when his side clashed against five-time champions Mumbai Indians. Chasing a target of 172 runs, KKR were in a spot of bother at 101/5 in 13 overs. However, Pat Cummins changed the complexion of the game in just one over, dispatching compatriot Daniel Sams for four sixes and two boundaries in a 35-run over. Cummins also secured a 14-ball half-century, the joint fastest in IPL history, seeing his side home comfortably.

37 – Harshal Patel vs CSK (2021), Prasanth Parameswaran vs RCB

IPL 2021 was a memorable year for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Harshal Patel, as he ended up with the most wickets in the tournament that year. However, the Purple Cap winner from that year won’t be looking back too fondly at his side’s encounter against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. Harshal, who had figures of 3/14 after his three overs, was taken to the cleaners in the final over of the innings, conceding 37 runs.

Chris Gayle, during his prime, was an absolute nightmare for the bowlers, especially at the start of the innings. Bowlers often struggled against the towering power-hitter, and it was the same when Prasanth Parameswaran faced the Carribean batting sensation. Parameswaran, representing the now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala, was smashed for four sixes and three boundaries by the southpaw in his very first over of the match, conceding the most runs in an over in IPL history.
