Jason Roy fined 30% of his match fee for showing dissent
English opener Jason Roy has been fined 30% of his match fee for his show of dissent against umpire Kumar Dharmasena during their semi-final victory over Australia. He was charged with breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct and two demerit points have been added to his disciplinary record.
The ICC released a statement confirming the fine, which read:
“Roy was found to have breached Article 2.8 ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to showing dissent at an umpires decision in an international match. In addition to the 30% fine, two demerit points have been added to Roy’s disciplinary record.”
Roy was furious at umpire Dharmasena after he adjudged him out for a caught behind after some aggressive appeals from the Australians. Dharmasena eventually gave him out after taking his time, which left Roy furious. As he departed from the crease, he was seen mouthing some aggressive words towards Dharmasena.
The replays showed that Roy was indeed not out, with there being a fair amount of distance between the bat and the ball. But England did not have a review left under their belts, which meant that Roy couldn’t appeal the decision.
By the time Roy was dismissed though, he had already done the damage with a blistering knock of 85 which guided England to a comfortable 8 wicket victory.
