Justin Langer in line to become LSG head coach

Former Australian cricketer and head coach Justin Langer has emerged as the frontrunner to become IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants’ next head coach. The ex-cricketer is reportedly in line to succeed Andy Flower, whose two-year contract with the franchise ended after the conclusion of IPL 2023.

Justin Langer, who is currently a part of the commentary team for the ongoing Ashes series in England, has been contacted by LSG management, according to a latest report by Cricbuzz. While both parties remain tight-lipped about any development, it is understood that the Lucknow-based franchise is eager for Langer to succeed former head coach Andy Flower.

The former Australian cricketer guided the Aussies to their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021 and was also part of his side’s dominant 4-0 Ashes victory. Apart from success at the international level, Langer has enjoyed a tremendous time in Australia’s premier domestic competition, the Big Bash League, winning three titles with Perth Scorchers.

Lucknow Super Giants qualified for the playoffs on successive occasions under Flower

The 52-year-old has not pursued any coaching roles since his controversial resignation from Australia’s head coach role, following a fallout with the players and Cricket Australia. The aforementioned source understands that the franchise and the former head coach are undergoing negotiations, with an announcement expected in the coming days.

Notably, the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise has enjoyed reasonable success in their two seasons under Andy Flower, qualifying for the knockout stages on both occasions. However, the players have been unable to rise to the occasion in crucial matches, finishing in third position in the last two years.
