Know more about Rohan Kunnummal – Kerala’s record-breaking batter

Kerala’s Rohan Kunnummal has stolen the limelight in the ongoing Ranji Trophy as the 23-years old batter struck three back-to-back centuries eventually becoming the first player from Kerala to achieve the milestone. Rohan’s third successive century helped Kerala in defeated Gujarat by eight wickets.

The right-handed opening batter from Kerala has certainly taken the ongoing Ranji Trophy season 2021/22 by storm. His first of the three tons came against Meghalaya at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot in February where he notched up 107 runs in 97 deliveries including 17 fours and a solitary six. Kerala posted 505/9d in the first innings in reply to Meghalaya’s 148 all-out subsequently winning the match by an innings and 166 runs.

Kunnummal then mustered 129 runs off 171 balls with the help of 16 fours and four maximums in the first innings against Gujarat on the same ground. Gujarat got all out for 388 as Rohan’s innings along with Vishnu Vinod’s ton helped Kerala in notching up 439 runs. Chasing a target of 214 runs, Rohan slammed unbeaten 106 runs in just 87 deliveries including 12 fours and three sixes with a strike rate of 121.84 to clinch the victory for Kerala by eight wickets.

Born on May 10, 1988, in Palakkad, Kerala, Rohan is an attacking opening batter and bowl part-time off-spin. He made his senior List A debut against Tamil Nadu in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Bhubaneswar on March 3, 2017. His First-Class debut came against Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy in Thumba in January 2020. In the T20 format, Rohan made his maiden appearance against Nagaland in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Mulapadu in February 2019.

He finished the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament 2021/22 as Kerala’s second-highest run-scorer after Sanju Samson with 168 runs in five innings with two half-centuries. Rohan’s average and strike rate were 42.00 and 109.09 respectively. He backed up his good performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021/22 as well as he ended up the tournament being Kerala’s highest run-getter. He smashed 264 runs in six innings with an average of 44.00 including two fifties.

By scoring hundreds in both the innings against Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy, Rohan became the second Kerala batter to achieve the landmark after Sambasiva Sarva. In the ongoing Ranji Trophy, he has already amassed 342 runs in three innings with a mind-boggling average of 171.00 and strike rate of 96.33.
