Know Your Player – Joe Root

Cricketing milestones, rise through the ranks, trials and tribulations and their glamorous lifestyles – we cover it all in ‘Know Your Player’! In this edition, we take a look at England’s best batsman in Test cricket from the current setup and their captain, Joe Root. Keep watching this space for a new superstar every time!

The Beginning

Root comes from a family steeped in cricket. His grandfather led a team in the Yorkshire League and his brother Billy is a regular with Glamorgan. Root was a stand-out performer for England U-19 in 2010 and it helped him earn a three-year professional contract with Yorkshire. The batsman continued churning out runs in the County Championship and that soon strengthened his Test aspirations. On his Test debut against India at Nagpur in 2012, Root gave a solid demonstration of his skills with a mature knock of 73. The young batsman did not look back after that and went on to play top-class innings for England in both Tests and ODIs. He is currently one of the four best all-format batsmen in the world alongside Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson.

Career Highlights

Off The Field

Root maintains his on-field calm demeanour off the field. Apart from his personal updates, he is also involved in many social causes and often raises appeals for supporting them. The English Test captain keeps a low profile but rises up to the occasion when performing his duty.
