The Rise

Washington’s journey began from the age-group cricket. He put up impressive performances in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup for India and went on to make his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu. The left-hander was initially seen as a top-order batsman but later earned his reputation on the basis of off-spin. With R Ashwin ruled out of the IPL 2017 season, Washington stepped up for Rising Pune Supergiants and delivered on the big stage.

After making his national debut in the white-ball formats, Nidahas Trophy 2018 proved to be a turning point in Washington’s career. He was named as the player of the series for his sterling performance. In the 2020-21 tour of Australia, the youngster stayed behind as a net bowler. With a rise in injuries, he received an opportunity in the Test side and put up a spirited performance.

Washington Sundar’s name has an interesting story. He was named by his father M. Sundar in honour of their neighbour named P.D. Washington, who played a pivotal role in supporting his cricket. Washington’s elder sister Shailaja Sundar is also a professional cricketer and has represented Tamil Nadu.
