LSG vs MI Review – Lucknow breaks Mumbai’s dream of Top 2 finish

Lucknow Super Giants defeated Mumbai Indians by five runs at the Ekana Sports City Stadium in Lucknow in the 63rd game of the IPL 2023 on Tuesday, May 16. Marcus Stoinis’ brilliant knock helped the hosts reach a respectable total, but during the run chase, the five-time champions could not build on their good start as they failed to chase the target down.

Coming in to bat after losing the toss, Lucknow Super Giants got off to the worst of starts as openers Deepak Hooda and Quinton de Kock only managed to amass 21 runs collectively. Furthermore, Prerak Mankad was sent packing on a golden duck as well. As things started looking bleak for the hosts, Marcus Stoinis and skipper Krunal Pandya showed resilience.

Pandya scored 49* runs in 42 deliveries before he walked off the field due to an injury. Marcus Stoinis, on the other hand, took the attack to the visitors. The Australian all-rounder played an unbeaten knock of 89 runs in 47 balls. He propelled the side to a total of 177 runs.

Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla were the only two bowlers who managed to take wickets in the game. Behrendorff took two wickets and conceded 30 runs in four overs. Whereas Chawla struck one and conceded 26 runs in three overs. Coming in to chase the target, Mumbai Indians got off to a scintillating start as Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma scored 59 and 37 runs, respectively.

Furthermore, things went from bad to worse for the visitors as Suryakumar Yadav failed to make an impact and was sent back to the pavilion for just seven runs. Nehal Wadhera also only managed to score 16 runs before he was dismissed. However, the knock of Tim David provided the side with some much-needed hope. The Australian batter played an unbeaten knock of 32 runs in 19 balls. Despite his valiant effort, Mumbai failed to chase the target down as they fell short by five runs

Marcus Stoinis: Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis was phenomenal in the first innings for Lucknow Super Giants. The 33-year-old scored an unbeaten 89 runs in just 47 balls. His knock was crucial for the hosts to post a respectable total on the board for Mumbai to chase.

Ishan Kishan: Indian batter Ishan Kishan provided the best of starts to Mumbai Indians during the run chase. The 24-year-old opened the innings alongside skipper Rohit Sharma and amassed 59 runs in 39 deliveries. His knock was crucial for Mumbai at the start of the chase.
