MI vs RR Review – Jaiswal’s ton in vain as Mumbai complete a memorable chase

Mumbai Indians gave the perfect birthday gift to their captain Rohit Sharma as they beat Rajasthan Royals by six wickets in Match 42 of IPL 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, also the milestone 1000th game in the tournament history.

After opting to bat first, Rajasthan Royals rode on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s scintillating innings of 124 off 62 balls and posted 212/7 in 20 overs. In reply, MI chased down the record-highest total at home courtesy of splendid knocks from Cameron Green (44 off 26), Suryakumar Yadav (55 off 29) and especially Tim David (45* off 14), who finished things off in style with three consecutive sixes off Jason Holder to secure a win for his side in the final over.

Earlier, Jaiswal completely owned MI’s bowling even as wickets kept falling at the other end. The 21-year-old marched to his maiden IPL ton, reaching the landmark in 53 balls. For MI, Arshad Khan (3/39 in three overs) and Piyush Chawla (2/34 in four overs) were the pick of the bowlers.

In the second innings, Rohit Sharma failed fell in the second over itself but Ishan Kishan (28 off 23) and Cameron Green (44 off 26) stabilized with their 38-ball 62-run stand before they were both dismissed by R Ashwin.

Suryakumar (55 off 29) and Tilak Verma (29* off 21) took the innings forward with their 51-run stand off 30 balls but Sandeep Sharma’s brilliance led to the former’s end. With 61 needed off the last 26 balls, David joined Tilak Varma and played a breathtaking innings of 45* off just 14 balls to take his side home with three balls to spare.

Yashasvi Jaiswal: The 21-year-old brought the crowd at the Wankhede Stadium on its feet with his breathtaking innings of 124 off 62 balls with the help of 16 fours and eight gigantic sixes.

Tim David: The Australian international came to the party at the right time for MI and played a blistering knock of 45* off 14 balls to help MI chase down the record highest total at the Wankhede Stadium.
